Best places to view sunsets in Singapore

Done with a long week of work, with nothing else on the schedule? Perhaps with a sunset on the horizon, a change of scenery may rejuvenate you. If you have never paid much attention to our sunsets, such a notion may be a little puzzling. Fear not, for there are many things that you can do with friends and family with a sunset as your backdrop.

This brings us to some of the key ingredients needed for a mesmerising sunset. First of all: Time. The sun generally sets at around 7pm, all year round. So once you have selected a fitting place, make sure to get there well before then.

You might even check the weather while you are at it. While a storm will be undesirable, clear skies are not actually a necessity as clouds can enhance the landscape. They can give a striking contrast between the gold glows cast on the clouds and the darkening sky. Add to this a wide open space, and you get to bask in the fresh air and stretch your limbs. Have a picnic, or play some sports; it is sure to be a pleasant change of pace from your usual busy day. Convinced? Then read on, for we have a number of suggestions for places that will serve these needs.

  1. Sentosa – Siloso Beach

Sentosa is one of the best places to bask in the setting sun’s golden glows. Located on the southern tip of Singapore, its sunset view is complemented by the gentle lapping of the waves against the soft sandy banks of its coastlines. Hence, we decided to visit the island to experience its radiance for ourselves.

Arriving in Sentosa at 6pm, we quickly settled down on Siloso Beach to catch the sunset. This eventually gave way to the view of a smooth sandbank replete with tiny islands that scattered themselves across the expanse of the ocean. Crossing a beach to access one of these islands, we camped out on the rugged rocks overlooking the water, taking in the view.

Eventually, the time had come. The sun began to wane as its formerly blinding light softened into a mellow orange hue. Given that the day we visited had been particularly cloudy, our expectations of a muted, dull sunset were easily surpassed by such a beautiful sight. However, such a scene was short-lived. As clouds began to blanket the horizon, drowning out the little light seeping through and filling the sky with an ever-darkening blue, we hurried to snap pictures before this fleeting moment passed us by. Afterwards, we decided to walk along the shores of the beach, observing the crowd as they, too, revelled in the temporary solace of a mesmerising sunset. Truly, it was a special experience that is worth treasuring as a core memory.

  1. Sentosa – Fort Siloso Skywalk

Located in Sentosa, The Fort Siloso Skywalk, is another unusual place to see the sunset. This location is ideal for people who appreciate heights and wish to see the sunset from a different angle. This 181-metre-long, towering 11-story Skywalk route offers you captivating views of the horizon along with a picturesque treetop walk.

You will get a bird's-eye view of the Siloso beach and a few skyscrapers, giving you a taste of Singaporean city life. You will also get to see the large harbour from which various boats and ferries will be departing. Isn't it wonderful how one spot can evoke so many various feelings in you? Take in the stunning beauty of Singapore's urban landscape and a magnificent sunset.

Here’s the real deal: The Sunset! As the day came to an end, I could not help but notice how the sun changed from blazing brilliantly during the day to gently dipping into the water. As the sun sets, tourists may take in an aerial view of Fort Siloso, stroll among the canopy trees, and get a taste of what it's like to be in a forest. In addition, tourists searching for something different to do may find the panoramic views of the Southern islands and a peek into Indonesia to be appealing. A refreshing breeze that helps people relax can be expected at this altitude. Overall, the experience was unforgettable.

  1. Marina at Keppel Bay

We made the trip down to Keppel Bay at 6.30pm. The sun was shining a bright golden yellow and hadn’t yet begun its descent over the horizon. This location is filled with lovely yachts floating on the water’s surface, making for a picturesque walk along the bridge before one gets to Pulau Keppel, the little island that has waterfront cafes and sweet marina views to enjoy.

At the edge of Keppel Island, lies a small winding path next to the waters, separated only by a grass bank and safety railings. The sound of the waves lapping gently against the grass-covered rocks offers much tranquillity, a comforting sound that soothes those who have had a long day at work or school. The sea breeze caresses one’s face, the soft pink streaks colour the horizon, while birds and crickets chirp softly nearby. Occasionally, a dog owner or jogger strolls by, keeping the area calm and serene without making it appear overly isolated from city life.

A soft bed of white flowers invites one to sit and watch, as the streaks begin to fade into hues, almost like a watercolour painting brought to life.

By 7.05pm, the evening begins to take over, and the path lighting turns on. As we watch the last of the pink and purple hues set over the horizon, it’s time to return to the mainland.

Keppel Bay is truly a relaxing and quiet place, and those looking for a peaceful seafront sunset view, with modernity lying a small distance behind, would enjoy the simple yet stunning views that Keppel Bay has to offer.

  1. Woodlands Waterfront Park

Looking for a spot that is away from the hustle and bustle of city life and overly swamped tourist spots? We present to you one of the best sunset spots, the Woodlands Waterfront Park. Located at the northern part of Singapore, along the straits of Johor, you get to experience the beauty of not just one but two countries. This is a popular spot for exercising as you would often see joggers, cyclists or simply anyone who wants to take a stroll to destress with the scenic sunset. This park is relatively big and it has many facilities that will enrich your experience.

The Woodlands Waterfront Park has a wonderful facility for you to capture your sunset with ease: this 400 metres long jetty which comes with a peaceful sea breeze and the scenery of the skyscrapers of Johor.

Another beautiful feature of this 11 hectare park, is its 700 metres long promenade. A suitable place to take a stroll, a jog or cycle along the straits of Johor while capturing the sunset and enjoying the seaside.

The goldenish hues of the sun gives a majestic feeling which is indescribable. The sea separating the two countries gives off a perfect reflection of the sun, making the experience so surreal. Perhaps, viewing the sun from the northern side of Singapore adds more colours to the sun which gives off a completely different feeling from viewing a typical beach sunset. For one who wishes to see the sun from a different perspective, this place is just for you.

  1. East Coast Park

East Coast Park in Singapore unfolds a captivating spectacle as the sun bids adieu, treating onlookers to an intricate dance of colours that paints the sky in a brilliant display. As the sun sinks beneath the horizon, a gradient of warm tones engulfs the heavens, casting a magical glow over the East Coast. The expansive shoreline becomes a theatre for nature's grandeur, with the gentle waves reflecting the myriad hues of orange, pink, and purple.
