HC Eats: Taiwan Delights

Disclaimer: All ratings are based on personal preference and mean no ill-intention.

With travelling overseas being out of the picture for many of us in the past two years, we may miss the unique cuisines we once enjoyed when touristing abroad. If you miss dining at Taiwan night markets and eateries, the Taiwan stall that opened this year is sure to excite you! The stall’s popularity can be witnessed from its long queues that sometimes begin to form before their shutters even open. You may be wondering – is their food really worth the long queue time? Well, I decided to try the four dishes on their menu, and rated them based on their flavour and price.

Braised Pork Rice

A hot item on the menu is the Braised Pork Rice ($3.50). This dish is bursting with flavour as it comes with small chunks of pork belly braised in a delectably savoury gravy atop a bowl of white rice. This is accompanied by an onsen egg that is soft and silky on the inside, as well as a

piece of Bok Choy on the side.

Overall: 4.5/5. This braised pork rice is definitely a winner for me. The gravy is absolutely addictive, and coupled with a fair amount of pork belly per serving, it definitely makes your money worth! Perhaps the only complaint I hold against this dish is the lack of vegetables, which is sure to be a downside for all veggie-lovers.

Oyster Mee Sua

Mee Sua dishes may not be available every day of the week. Thus, when I finally chanced upon a day when the Taiwan stall was selling their Oyster Mee Sua ($3.50), I knew I had to get a taste of it. This dish is served with oysters and Mee Sua drowned in thick and copious gravy.

Overall: 2/5. I did not enjoy the oyster mee sua as I found the gravy to be too bland and the oysters did not appeal to my tastebuds. I would say that this is worth a try, and you can decide whether to get it again. Afterall, it boils down to personal preference.

If seafood does not appeal to you, another option would be Chicken Mee Sua ($3.00) which shares the same savoury gravy, but served with thinly sliced chicken instead.

Overall: 3/5. While I share the same sentiments about the gravy, the chicken mee sua appeals more to me as I found the strips of chicken to be more pleasant. This is also worth the price considering it kept me satisfied and full.

Crispy Chicken Rice

A must-try for all fried chicken enthusiasts is the Crispy Chicken Rice ($3.00). They are extremely generous with their salted chicken. This comes with a sunny side-up and a piece of Bok Choy as well. I tried this with their chilli, provided at the stall front, which added a kick to the already piquant fried chicken.

Overall: 4/5. The crispy chicken rice is yet another winner. Not only are they generous with the portion, making your money worth, this dish is essential on a day when you are absolutely starving as it is sure to make you full! Although I did find the chicken to be a tad too salty, it is nonetheless still appetising and palatable!

After trying all the items on their menu, I can definitely see why the Taiwan stall is largely popular within the student body. With affordable pricing and recognisable dishes, it is an easy choice to make when deciding what to eat for recess. It is worth noting that the Taiwan stall does not charge an additional amount for its take-away boxes. However, we should still try our best to be environmentally conscious and bring our own containers when taking-away food from the canteen!
