What is your reason for taking Math? Is it because you enjoy doing Math? Or is it because you need it for your future dream job? Whatever the reason, I hope to give you some insight into JC Math and share some tips on studying for the subject. Quick disclaimer: I am not a professional, and every student may find different learning styles that work for them better. This article is a guide for those unsure about where to begin, but may not guarantee you an A.
Some of you may be wondering about what the JC Math curriculum entails. At the J1 level, we are learning:
Sequences and series
Graphs and Transformations
Inequalities and system of equations
Functions
Differentiation
Integration
Vectors
Post-promo, you would be required to learn series expansion and differential equations.
Math papers, at the J1 H2 level, would be a 3-hour long exam paper, with no breaks. Yes, it may be one of the longest papers you would be sitting for, and that is why it is essential to train your “stamina”, which I will be sharing more information about later. At the J2 level, expectations will rise, and there will be 2 3-hour papers instead. Math in Hwa Chong
Each teacher’s teaching style may vary, but self-learning constitutes the bulk of your Math journey. The Math department creates a Math Google site, with all the necessary Math resources. In the e-copy of your lecture notes, you will find video icons next to certain segments of the lecture notes. The icons, when clicked, will link you to video lectures of that segment. You are expected to go through the lecture notes and learn by yourself before lessons. During lessons, the teacher will only address certain key points, go through worksheets, and give summaries of the chapter. Therefore, you must have the self-discipline to plan your learning, as it may be hard to catch up once you fall behind.
Some tips?
So far, the Math curriculum in Hwa Chong May seem intimidating, but I hope that with these tips that I am about to share, you can get through your JC life smoothly.
Follow the Math Scheme Of Work
Do the work assigned to you
Train your stamina
Choose what work to do
Identify concepts you don’t understand
Conclusion
Other than the tips shared earlier, you should also consult your own Math tutors if you need clarification, and take breaks too. It is important to prioritise quality over quantity. I hope that the advice shared was useful, and all the best to your Math journey ahead!
